Initial end-to-end performance evaluation of 10-Gigabit Ethernet

چکیده
We present an initial end-to-end performance evaluation of Intel’s R 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) network interface card (or adapter). With appropriate optimizations to the configurations of Linux, TCP, and the 10GbE adapter, we achieve over 4-Gb/s throughput and 21s end-to-end latency between applications in a local-area network despite using less capable, lower-end PCs. These results indicate that 10GbE may also be a cost-effective solution for system-area networks in commodity clusters, data centers, and web-server farms as well as wide-area networks in support of computational and data grids.

Low-cost Gigabit Ethernet at Work
In this paper we report about the recently completed porting of the Genoa Active Message MAchine (GAMMA) to the Netgear GA620 Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Such device is a low-cost (less than 300 US dollars at the time of writing) Gigabit Ethernet adapter with a state-of-art internal architecture based on two programmable on-board processors and substantial amount of on-board RAM, which makes this...
متن کاملHigh-Performance Cluster Computing over Gigabit/Fast Ethernet
Clusters of workstations are often considered to be an attractive platform for low-cost supercomputing, especially if a high-speed network is used to interconnect high-end workstations. In this paper, we investigate distributed network computing on a tree-structure cluster which consists of intermediate and leaf workstations. The intermediate workstations are interconnected together by a Gigabi...
متن کامل40 Gigabit Ethernet: Prototyping Transparent End-to-End Connectivity
The ever increasing demands of data intensive eScience applications have pushed the limits of computer networks. With the launch of the new 40 Gigabit Ethernet(40GE) standard, 802.3ba, applications can go beyond the common 10 Gigabit/s per data stream barrier for both local area, and as demonstrated in the GLIF 2010 and Supercomputing 2010 demos[3], wide area setups. In this article we profile ...
متن کاملVoice and Video over Gigabit Ethernet and ATM Backbone Networks: A Simulation Study
This chapter aims to report on the performance of voice and video traffic over two popular backbone network technologies, namely Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). ATM networks are being used by many universities and organizations for their unique characteristics such as scalability and guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS), especially for voice and video applications. G...
